Networking Concepts

Types of Networking
·         There are three main types of the computer networking
o   LAN
o   MAN
o   WAN
·         A LAN covers a room or a building. It can be wired or wireless.
·         A MAN covers a network in a city. It can be wired or wireless.
·         A WAN covers wide areas such as in a city, country or a network between two or more countries. It can be through wireless communication technologies such as
o   ISDN Lines
o   Frame relay
o   ATM
·         ISDN Lines
o   Integrated Services Digital Network.
o   A high-speed digital communications network evolving from existing telephone services.
o   The goal in developing ISDN is to which requires digital-to-analog conversions.
o   ISDN is available in two forms, known as BRI (Basic Rate Interface) and PRI (Primary Rate Interface).
·         Frame Relay
o   A packet-switching protocol for use on WANs (wide area networks).
o   Frame relay transmits variable-length packets at up to 2 Mbps over predetermined, set paths known as PVC's (permanent virtual circuits).
·         ATM
o   Asynchronous Transfer Mode
o   A network technology capable of transmitting data, voice, audio, video, and frame relay traffic in real time.
o   Data, including frame relay data, is broken into packets containing 53 bytes each, which are switched between any two nodes in the system at rates ranging from 1.5 Mbps to 622 Mbps (over fiber optic cable).
